A large hole has appeared in Powick Old Bridge, a medieval structure over the River Teme, following a partial collapse of its wingwall in January. Worcestershire County Council plans to install a platform to start repairs once the plan is finalized. The hole’s recent emergence raises concerns about the bridge’s structural integrity.
The January collapse was controversially blamed by council transport leader Mike Rouse on the removal of a weir by the Environment Agency, which they deny. The bridge, submerged during winter storms, has also accumulated debris.
Powick Old Bridge is historically significant, dating back to before 1447 and witnessing key battles during the English Civil War. Paul Harding from Discover History and Cllr Alan Amos emphasize the urgency of repairs, fearing further deterioration. The Battle of Worcester Society and local authorities express concern and stress the importance of prompt repair work.
Worcestershire County Council is awaiting final designs for temporary works, which will protect the bridge and allow repairs while considering flood risks. The bridge will remain closed until repairs are completed.
