Levelling Up Fund snub for Worcester Civil War memorial

A heritage champion has spoken of his disappointment after the plug was pulled on Government funding for an English Civil War memorial in Worcester.

Daniel Daniels, chairman of the Battle of Worcester Society (BoWS), says Levelling Up funding had been sought to help pay for a national memorial to the Battle of Worcester by the King Street car park, near Sidbury.

The engraved and coloured sculpture is designed to be made from laser cut steel set in layers to show the action and drama of the event and was intended to occupy the width of the existing boundary wall.

The Government would have funded £65,000 of the £80,000 project, with the shortfall being made up by the BoWS, a registered charity. The early design work was completed by sculptor Ken Potts, know for the sculpture of Edward Elgar on Worcester High Street.

Mr Daniels described the blow as a ‘snub’. He said: “The Battle of Worcester Society is very disappointed to learn that our application for Levelling Up Funding support for the Battle of Worcester national memorial, previously very close to final approval under the former central government, has been unsuccessful. This decision represents a significant blow to efforts to recognise one of the most pivotal events in British history.”
