Lone Musketeer Stands Guard Over Collapsed Civil War Bridge

September 25, 2024

A solitary figure, dressed in the garb of a 17th-century musketeer, has taken up a vigil at the beleaguered Powick Bridge, a historic landmark that suffered a partial collapse earlier this year. The symbolic act comes on the 382nd anniversary of the Battle of Powick Bridge, the opening skirmish of the English Civil War.

The bridge, a silent witness to the tumultuous times of the 17th century, has become a focal point for local heritage champions who are rallying to save the structure. Despite the damage, hopes remain high that the bridge can be restored to its former glory.

Daniel Daniels, chairman of the Battle of Worcester Society, emphasized the bridge’s historical significance. “Its collapse has stirred concerns among historians, locals, and civil war enthusiasts about the preservation of such a historic site for future generations,” he said.

While Worcestershire County Council is taking steps toward restoration, local community members and heritage groups are calling for continued attention to the project. The bridge, considered by many to stand at the heart of Worcester’s Civil War history, is a vital link to the past that must be preserved for future generations.
